ABOUT GMIS 2023

Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), established in 2016, is a joint initiative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT) of the United Arab Emirates to provide a global platform addressing the multi-faceted spillovers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. GMIS aims to do this through multi-stakeholder discussion, knowledge dissemination and action. Previous successful hosting of GMIS Flagship Editions/Summits include Abu Dhabi (2017); Yekaterinburg (2019); Hannover Messe (2020, virtually); and Dubai Expo (2021), as well as the addition of GMIS legacy initiatives, aiming to advance the discussions to concrete cooperation ventures and actions. This 2023 edition of GMIS will break new ground through hosting its Flagship Edition in parallel to COP28 in Dubai, thus giving it even greater visibility at the highest level of global policymaking.

To this end, UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna will host a run-up event, entitled, “Smart Manufacturing: People*Art*Living”. This event will serve to raise the profile of the upcoming GMIS 2023 Flagship Edition amongst Vienna-based stakeholders, such as Permanent Missions to UNIDO and the other International Organizations in Vienna, the artistic community, academics and researchers, and indeed other United Nations Specialized Agencies. It will also break new ground in the context of the GMIS initiative, for the first time exhibiting how smart manufacturing and digital transformation is revolutionizing not only the factory floor, but also the artistic world, notably in the field of art restoration.

The event will take place in two parts, in order to do each topic justice, with the first edition focusing on the themes of "People" and "Living”. The event will thus take place from 9-13 October at the Vienna International Centre, and will include not only an opening ceremony at the Rotunda, but also discussion panels, an exhibition, a side event, workshops, and matchmaking. The second edition of the event will focus on the ‘’Art’’ component as a standalone event in

January/February 2024. These events will offer valuable insights, discussions, and networking opportunities that highlight the crucial role of individuals in shaping the future of manufacturing and industrialization.

Our Events

Smart Manufacturing*People

Digital transformation has its widest impact on people, and therefore the greatest care must be applied to people-centric solutions. Smart manufacturing has immense potential to improve human lives, through inter alia enhancing industrial safety standards, safeguarding the environment, decarbonizing industrial production, improving educational facilities, improving energy efficiency, etc. Policymakers must work hand in glove with civil society, private industry, the research community and governments to accentuate the positive gains of smart manufacturing and to minimize the potential negative outcomes: GMIS aims to contribute to this process

Smart Manufacturing*Art

Blockchain technology and Web 3.0 can revolutionize the future of art by reducing intermediaries and increasing transparency, trust, and security for artists, collectors, dealers, brokers, and galleries alike. Web 3.0 is making the internet simple, open and decentralized, hence reshaping the ninth art, usually refer to the gaming and comics industry. Art has traditionally been an intensely personal industry, a creative endeavor taken on by a singular artist or group of artists, at most. However, even the creative world is being impacted by smart technology in ways previously unforeseen. New technologies are also giving rise to new forms of artwork and methods of trading, most notably non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain, even poetry. GMIS: Pioneering the future of art through innovative creation, restoration, and sales.

Smart Manufacturing*Living

Smart manufacturing is also having a major effect on how humans live, thrive and survive, most notably in the realms of housing, public infrastructure and transport. Smart manufacturing has the capacity to make these sectors more energy efficient, less polluting, safer and yet more robust. Only through enhancing multi-stakeholder partnerships that smart manufacturing can be effectively harnessed to meet critical economic, environmental and social needs, this is GMIS contributes.
